This is a Schmidt camera photograph of the region around the center
star in the Northern Cross, Gammma Cygni. The star is surrounded by all
sorts of nebulousity: bright and dark. The strange object in the lower right
which looks like a waterspot is NGC 6888. Notice the dark obscuring clouds
cutting across the bright nebulae to the left of Gamma Cygni. The tight
star cluster just above Gamma is NGC 6910. The entire complex of bright
nebulae is called IC 1318. B343, Barnard catalog of dark nebula, is the
dark patch to the right of Gamma and straight up from 6888. M 29 is in
this picture, but it is only a forlorn group of 4 stars near the bottom
center.
